Cocktail attire means a knee-length or midi dress, dressier than office wear but short of a gown. 2. A maxi with a slit

A flowing maxi in a deep colour is the outfit that works across the widest range of Indian wedding functions — long enough to be respectful at a ceremony, dressy enough for the reception after it.

The side slit is what keeps it from being heavy. It also makes stairs, cars and dance floors possible, which a straight maxi doesn't.

3. Sequins, for evening only

What the dress codes actually mean

• Cocktail attire — knee-length to midi, dressier than office, shorter than a gown. Print, satin, velvet and subtle embellishment all qualify. Floor-length is not required and can read as overdressed.
• Semi-formal — the same thing, one notch calmer. A plain midi in a good fabric, minimal shine.
• Festive / Indo-western — colour and embellishment are welcome. This is the code where sequins and metallics are safest.
• Black tie — floor-length. A midi is genuinely underdressed here, which is the one case where length is not negotiable.
• No dress code stated — assume cocktail. It is the hardest brief to be wrong in either direction.

Wedding guest rules worth knowing

Nothing white, ivory, cream or champagne. This is the one rule with no exceptions, and it extends further than people expect — a heavily white-based print counts.

Nothing red at a traditional Indian wedding ceremony, unless the couple has said otherwise. Red is the bride's colour at most ceremonies; at a cocktail or reception it's usually fine.

Check the venue floor before choosing the heel. Grass, sand and uneven stone are common at Indian venues and a stiletto is unwearable on all three. A block heel solves it without losing height.

Match the function, not the invitation card. A mehendi in daylight and a reception at 9pm need different outfits even when the dress code printed on the card is identical.
